We will end February with a beautiful route through one of the natural parks in the province of Castellón, the Desierto de las Palmas. The walk will take place on SATURDAY 28th FEBRUARY.
Located 85 km from both Navajas and Valencia, it covers part of the municipalities of Benicassim, Borriol, Castellón, Cabanes and La Pobla de Tornesa. It is home to the Carmelite convent dating from 1784, built after the previous one collapsed due to flooding. It is called ‘Desert’ because of the expanse of uninhabited land where we will see the hermitages and caves that the friars used to pray in solitude, and ‘De las Palmas’ because of the abundance of palm hearts, also called Margalló, the only native European palm tree.
This circular route is approximately 8.5 kilometres long, takes around four hours to complete and has an elevation gain of 230 metres. We will climb to the Pico del Bartolo (729 metres) along the ridge to enjoy the magnificent views of the inland villages and the Mediterranean coast. In good weather, we will also be able to see the Columbretes and Penyagolosa islands.
This is a medium-difficulty walk, so comfortable clothing, walking sticks, a hat, hiking boots, water and lunch are recommended. We will meet at the Salto de la Novia monument in Navajas at 8:00 a.m. to travel by car. It is possible to stay for lunch and go directly to the starting point of the route (*please let us know in advance in both cases).
Come and enjoy a morning in the great outdoors!
