The Elm

The Elm is a living part of the history of Navajas, a monumental tree that is almost 400 years old and presides over the centre of the town’s main square. Under its branches the life of the Navajas people has passed for almost four centuries. Under its branches it has for years been a meeting and gathering point, a place to celebrate popular festivals and all the most important events in the town. The elm tree has formed part of the Navajas coat of arms since 1961, together with the Muslim tower. Both are the most important emblems that distinguish the uniqueness of the municipality and its roots. This elm tree was planted in 1636, by the justice of Navajas Roque Pastor, as a symbol of unity and structuring of the new space repopulated by old Christians. Since then, it has presided over the square, withstanding all kinds of vicissitudes of history and the weather, resisting as the longest-lived neighbour of the town.

It belongs to the Ulmus Minor mill species and is catalogued as a monumental tree of the Valencian Community. It has a height of 19 metres, a trunk perimeter of 6.90 m. and occupies a surface area of 227 m2. In 2019 it was declared ‘tree of the year in Spain’ by the association Bosques sin Fronteras (Forests without Borders).
