On 2 August, we will be able to enjoy this initiative to promote tourism and scientific outreach, which offers an astro-tourism experience to mark the Total Solar Eclipse on 12 August.
The project ‘Touching the Sky from Alto Palancia’ has been launched by the Alto Palancia Association of Municipalities and is funded by the Castellón Provincial Council as part of its call for proposals to strengthen the province’s tourism offering. The programme aims to bring astronomy closer to the public and position the region as a leading destination for enjoying this event.
PART ONE:
The experience will begin at sunset with an informative talk given by specialist staff, explaining the characteristics of solar eclipses, the different types, safety recommendations for observing them, and various scientific facts relating to this phenomenon.
Afterwards, participants will be able to observe the Sun through a specialised solar telescope, which will allow them to safely view details such as sunspots. This first part will also include a practical element, as it will help participants familiarise themselves with the position the Sun will occupy during the total eclipse on 12 August.
The aim is to enable anyone wishing to experience this astronomical event to prepare in advance so they can observe it safely from suitable locations.
PART TWO:
The second part of the activity will take place at a location outside the town centre, free from light pollution. There, participants will take a guided tour of the night sky to identify constellations, stars and planets visible during the summer.
The observation will be carried out with the aid of an astronomical laser pointer and several telescopes, and will include the Moon, the planets visible on each day, various deep-sky objects and, weather permitting, the Milky Way.
The project also incorporates content related to the culture of the night sky and astro-tourism, with the aim of offering a comprehensive experience that combines science, natural heritage and sustainable tourism.
