Patron’s Festivities, September

They are held in honour of the “Virgen de la Luz” on the third Sunday in September. A week before, the queen of the festivities is proclaimed in a solemn ceremony under the centenary elm tree in the square. Throughout the week there are cultural events and concerts by the town’s choir and brass band. On Saturday afternoon, after a shot of real bombs, the act of offering to the Virgin is held in the Elm Square. A parade through the streets leads the procession, in which the Navajera woman dressed in her best clothes in the typical village costume stands out, to make the floral offering to the patron saint. In the evening, the “Verbena del Mantón” (shawl festival) is held, in which the queen and her court of honour inaugurate the dance with the manila shawls, a colourful and colourful event. On Sunday, mass is held in the morning and in the afternoon the procession in honour of the “Virgen de la Luz”, which is presided over by the local authorities and the queen of the fiestas. Once the religious events are over, the bullfighting week begins. On Monday the celebrations begin with a “paella competition”, which is then eaten in the Elm Square. Every day at two o’clock in the afternoon there is a bullfight, where the young men run through the streets in front of the bulls. Throughout the day there is an exhibition of cattle in the Elm Square and in the evening the famous ‘toro embolao’. Groups of friends get together to celebrate the festivities, each one has its own platform in the square and its own meeting place for lunch and dinner in brotherhood. A series of musical events liven up the evenings, costume contests, open-air dances and mobile discos bring together in the square or in the Municipal Auditorium and young people from neighbouring towns who enjoy themselves until the early hours of the morning. On Sunday night, the end of the fiestas is celebrated with fireworks display in the streets of the town centre.
