Esperanza Pilgrimage

It is celebrated on the day of “San Vicente Ferrer”, the second Monday after Easter, and oscillates with this celebration depending on whether it rises or falls, normally in April. On this day the pilgrimage to the hermitage of “La Esperanza”, located 1 km south of the town, is held. The pilgrims set off from the church square carrying their canes with ribbons tied to them, one for each year, which are handed out at this point. Once the pilgrims reach the summit where the hermitage is located, a mass is held and then the waters of the spring are blessed. The hermitage has been known since the end of the 15th century, although the building we see here was rebuilt in the 19th century next to the monastery of “Los Jerónimos”.

Once the religious ceremonies are over, the pilgrims get ready to occupy the hillside. The pine grove is the recreational area where people gather with their friends or families to celebrate with a picnic lunch and enjoy nature. The “Sindicato de Riegos”, organiser of the events, distributes wine and pastries among the attendees. After lunch, on the esplanade next to the irrigation channel, the youngsters have fun and jump into the water, jumping rope and dancing with the charanga.

Around three o’clock in the afternoon the descent towards the village begins, the people organise themselves in a relaxed march, accompanying the image of the Virgin.

When they reach the main street, the music band accompanies the procession to the church. Afterwards, in the square, they get ready to enjoy the afternoon, with popular games and a children’s playground for the children. It was customary in the evening for gangs of friends to get together for dinner, an event that was repeated the following two days. Nowadays, only a few people get together so as not to lose this ancient custom, known as the three days of “San Vicente”.
