Jérica

Jérica is a municipality in the Alto Palancia region, 10 km. from Navajas. It is located in the upper part of the Palancia river and has a great historical and monumental wealth that has been reflected in its urban configuration. Thus, its location on a rocky promontory gives it a special singularity to the entire historic centre of Jérica, with a beautiful old town that is well worth a visit.

At the top of the hill where we find the town centre of Jérica sits the castle, of which the ruins and the restored keep, popularly known as `La Torreta´, remain.  Also outstanding in the centre of the town is the slender and beautiful Mudejar tower, the `Torre de la Alcudia´, of Muslim origin and octagonal floor plan, which was transformed in 1622 into a bell tower to ring out religious services.

The environment surrounding the town of Jérica is also of great beauty, the meander formed by the Palancia as it passes through Jérica is known as `Vuelta de La Hoz´, a promenade that runs parallel to the river and between steep rocky cliffs where there is an area for climbing. Another unique spot to visit is the Randurías park, located next to the Palancia riverbed and with many species of trees.

The most important festivities are those held in February in honour of the patron saint, Santa Águeda, and in September in honour of the Divina Pastora. The Vole is also very famous, with the traditional ringing of bells from the Mudejar tower, and the tasting of walnuts, cod and wine. In summer there is a medieval fair, the oldest of the villages in the region, which receives a large number of visitors every year.
