Soneja is a municipality in the Alto Palancia region about 12 km from Navajas and is situated to the right of the Palancia river, on a plain surrounded by mountains. It is an enclave with elements of great environmental value where we find the Municipal Natural Site of La Dehesa* and with important urban elements such as fountains, drinking troughs and washing places.
Strolling through the old quarter of Soneja, with its classic Moorish layout, we can visit the Old Palace of the Montellano family, the Museum Collection of Plaster and the Parish Church of San Miguel Arcángel, an 18th century temple with a very old and valuable set of bells. We can also visit the Hermitage of San Francisco Javier, from the 17th century, together with the Hermitage of `Cristo de la Providencia´.
During the visit we can also visit the remains of the 19th century Carlist Wall and enjoy the town’s hydraulic heritage, full of fountains and water troughs, with the Mirla and Noyanta washing places, and El Arco, a 14th-15th century aqueduct.
The most important fiestas in Soneja are the Fiesta de San Matías at the end of February, the local bullfighting week at the beginning of August and the Fiestas Patronales (patron saint’s day) during the last week of September.
*La Dehesa Municipal Nature Site: The Municipal Nature Site ‘La Dehesa’ was declared as such in 2008 and covers an area of 681.40 ha. Due to the presence of numerous rare, endemic or endangered botanical species, in November 2000 part of the site was declared a micro-reserve of flora. `La Laguna de la Dehesa´ is located on siliceous sands and argillaceous sand from the Triassic, the only temporary lagoon of its kind in the whole of Valencia, in whose interior grows the Polygonum amphibium, an endemic aquatic plant, and on its banks, rushes and bulrushes.Information about the site: https://mediambient.gva.es/es/web/parajes-naturales-municipales/pnm-la-dehesa-soneja
