Bejís

A municipality in the Alto Palancia region, 27 km from Navajas. Located 800 metres above sea level, in the foothills of the `Sierra del Toro´, at its feet flows the Palancia river, whose source is very close, and around it we can enjoy a landscape of extensive and steep mountains with nearby elevations such as those offered by the peaks of the mountains La Juliana (1,476 m.), La Pericona (1,468 m.) or Peñaescabia (1,331 m.), the latter inserted in the Municipal Natural Site of Peñaescabia*.

The municipality of Bejís lies at the foot of the castle, of Roman origin and built on a hill forded by two rivers (Palancia and Canales), which today only conserves some remains of walls and cisterns. Also known as the ‘Castle of the Order of Calatrava’, it has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest and in its architecture, we can appreciate elements of the different historical periods it has gone through.

In the village we can visit the Ethnological Museum, the Hermitage of the Virgen del Loreto (VXIII century), the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (XVI – XVII century) or the so-called ‘Granero del Infante’. On the outskirts of the town, on the road leading to the Cloticos Fountain, we find the most important architectural work of Bejís, the Aqueduct. This work was declared a National Historic Monument in 1983 and is made up of five arches set on powerful ashlars, although originally it must have had at least seven arches and a length of 125 metres.

Another must-see in Bejís is the Cloticos Fountain, whose source is located in the foothills of `Montes Universales´ and springs from this spring after years of long journeys under the mountain, which acts as a natural filter and guarantees the original purity and balanced mineralisation of this excellent quality water. This is where the spring and bottling plant of ‘Agua de Bejís’ is located.

As for the most important festivals in Bejís, we should mention the festivity of San Blas on 3 February, the commemoration of the town’s town charter, which is celebrated with a medieval fair on 18 August, and the patron saint festivities, which take place in the first week of September.

*The ‘Peñaescabia’ Municipal Natural Site was declared as such in 2004, has a surface area of 474.83 ha. and is located in the physiographic unit of the ‘Palancia River Valley’. Although the source of the river is outside the site, it is the small ravines that descend from the El Toro-Barracas plateau and end at the foot of Peñaescabia that give rise to the river. The most characteristic landscape of the protected area are the river gorges and canyons with sloping hillsides covered with pine forests that converge at the bottom of the ravine, where there are terraced crops, mainly olive and almond trees.
