The project `Patrimonio sobre raíles: la Vía Verde de Ojos Negros como símbolo industrial´ (Heritage on rails: the Ojos Negros Greenway as an industrial symbol) of the IES Jérica-Viver (https://www.europeanheritagedays.com/node/539040), prepared by: Marcos Belarte Segarra, Irene Camany de Julián, María García-Moreno García, Gracia López Carot and Marcos Teca Esteve (1st Baccalaureate) has received the First Mention of the prizes awarded within the Young European Heritage Makers 2024 call, a competition organised by the Council of Europe and the European Commission and conceived as a storytelling that wants to give a voice to the new generations, encouraging them to develop their own view of their heritage and to commit themselves to its conservation.
This project has made its way among the more than 500 projects presented at national level, winning out over the rest due to the involvement of the students in the promotion of the Greenway as a symbol of sustainability, together with the implementation of interviews with the local population.
It should be remembered that the Ojos Negros Greenway is a worthy successor to the railway line built to transport iron ore from the Sierra Menera deposit to the iron and steel works in Puerto de Sagunto. In its layout, the Palancia river valley is the setting for the stage through the Alto Palancia region, on a route that descends from the Barracas plateau to the fertile Valencian orchards on the shores of the Mediterranean. On this route, as it passes through Navajas, next to the Vía Verde, we can find the remains of an old quarry with the station and the ruins of the complementary installations that were used for the exploitation of limestone for the Altos Hornos del Mediterráneo.
The project developed by the students of 1st Baccalaureate of IES Jérica-Viver, whom we congratulate for their Mention, delves into the history of this Greenway and the heritage elements that are preserved in it, a history of which Navajas is also part and that leads us to share the video result of their fantastic work:
